It is one of the most common questions: a visitor opening the map for the first time sees two large districts. According to TÜİK's address-based records, Şahinbey had 946,812 residents at the end of 2024 and Şehitkamil 888,696. Both, when you look closely, count as a kind of city centre. Almost the entire population of the city fits into these two districts, so for someone looking at the map, choosing between them seems pointless at first. There is no single answer to where to stay in Gaziantep, because the right district depends on why you are coming.
Şahinbey is home to the historic centre
Gaziantep Castle, the Coppersmiths' Bazaar, the old caravanserais and the historic street fabric all lie within Şahinbey. For a visitor who wants to explore the city's culture on foot, this side has the advantage. The streets are barely wide enough for a car. Traffic is heavy, drivers struggle to park, and that is the unavoidable price of the historic quarter. Accommodation in the old town tends to be boutique-sized, so finding enough space for a large family is not always easy. On the other hand, for a visitor who wants to sit in a caravanserai courtyard with a coffee in the late afternoon, this side wins hands down.
Şehitkamil is the new centre
Şehitkamil is the district of wide boulevards, residential complexes, shopping malls and major hospitals. The supply of daily rental apartments is concentrated here too. In Emlakjet's August 2026 listings the district had more than seventy daily rental ads, starting from 599 TL. Parking is less of a problem. Supermarkets and pharmacies reach into the side streets, every part of the city is about fifteen minutes away by car, and the large malls and the university campus are inside the same district. Our apartments are in Şehitkamil as well.
Which plans suit which district?
Visitors coming for treatment or to accompany a patient may choose Şehitkamil, where the hospitals are concentrated, and business travellers may also stay on this side because they want to be close to the industrial zone and the airport roads. Both groups end up in the same district. A visitor on a two-night trip just to see the historic centre, however, can see more on foot from Şahinbey. For families who want to sightsee and be comfortable at the same time, larger apartments are easier to find in Şehitkamil, and fifteen minutes on the road is enough for the sights.
Short distances are what make the choice hard
The gap between the two districts is not the hour-long journey you get in big cities. The Zeugma Mosaic Museum, the castle area and the bazaar are a short drive from Şehitkamil too. The airport is about twenty kilometres away and takes around forty minutes from either district. Your choice of district sets your daily rhythm; it does not change what you can see. The centre of gravity of your plans decides the right district.
Looking at the neighbourhood is more useful
A district name on its own does not tell you much. What should you ask? The same district has noisy flats on the main road and quiet ones on back streets. Which floor, which side of the building, is there a lift, where is the parking? The answers to these four questions matter more than the district, and you can ask them all in one message before booking. It is also worth checking how prices vary from one neighbourhood to another.
A visitor touring the historic centre sees more on foot from Şahinbey. A visitor with a hospital or industrial schedule stays in Şehitkamil.
