The kitchen is one of the features daily rental listings push the hardest. But how many times does a family of four actually use that kitchen on a three-night trip to Gaziantep? Most of the time the answer is once or twice. A daily rental apartment with kitchen does not pay off the same way for every guest; the gain depends directly on the length of stay and the purpose of the trip.
On short stays the kitchen barely gets used
On two- or three-night city breaks, the day is planned around being out. The city is on UNESCO's gastronomy list, and nobody expects visitors to eat lunch and dinner at home. In practice the kitchen's only job is breakfast. Still, that counts as a small saving, because for a family of four, breakfast out is a separate expense every morning. There is also the time factor. Looking for a table for four at nine in the morning pushes your arrival at the museum back by an hour.
After a week the sums change
On stays that reach seven nights, the picture moves somewhere else. Eating every meal out strains both the budget and the stomach. Breakfast at home and dinners out is the routine most guests slide into after day three, without anyone planning it. With that routine, the weekly food bill clearly drops. On a stay longer than a week, the kitchen becomes a budget item; with weekly and monthly rental apartments the difference is even clearer. Guests who make breakfast at home leave lunch and dinner to the city's kitchen.
When does a kitchen become essential?
For three groups a kitchen can be a must, so keep them in mind when you look at daily rental apartments. Families with babies need a hob and a fridge for bottles and baby food. For guests undergoing treatment or staying with a patient in hospital, salt-free, sugar-free and low-fat diets cannot be handled by eating out. On long business assignments, restaurants lose their appeal by the twentieth evening, and the kitchen becomes one of the reasons for choosing the apartment. For these three groups, the kitchen matters even more than the price comparison. Those travelling with elderly guests belong in the same category, because medication times and meal routines rarely fit a programme built around eating out.
Having a kitchen is not enough
A listing that mentions a kitchen does not mean the kitchen is actually usable, so check this when you rent. Ask separately about the hob, fridge, pots and pans, plates and cutlery, kettle and washing-up liquid. An oven and a microwave are not standard in every apartment. A washing machine falls under the same heading and, on stays longer than a week, directly shrinks the size of your suitcase. For large families it is also worth asking whether there is a dishwasher, because washing up twice a day for four or five people is the holiday fatigue nobody plans for.
Our 1-bedroom apartments also have a washing machine in the kitchen, while our studios have a kitchenette. Just ask about the equipment in your apartment before you book.
Distance to the supermarket counts
The value of an apartment with a kitchen often depends on having a shop nearby. In Şehitkamil, chain supermarkets reach right into the residential streets, so you do not have to go far late in the evening for something you forgot. In an apartment outside the city, the same kitchen is far less useful, because every shopping trip turns into a drive. Over a one-week stay, that means at least three separate trips. The money saved goes back out on fuel and time, so a kitchen's value cannot be separated from its location.
Over three nights a kitchen is a convenience. Over seven nights it enters the budget, and on a long assignment it is, of course, the reason for choosing the apartment.

What kitchen equipment should I ask about?
Ask separately about the hob, oven, fridge, kettle, pots and pans and tableware. Not every apartment has an oven and a microwave.
Is a kitchen essential for a family with a baby?
A hob and a fridge are needed for bottles and baby food, so for families with babies a kitchen is a necessity, not a preference.
